Activies and Events

The SPC activities programme at Camberwell Road and on the Aylesbury estate is a combination of regular meetings and events arranged by our affiliated groups together with courses and activities organised by the Centre staff team in response to consultation with our membership or to mark special events that are of particular relevance for older people. The activities listed below are included in our current programme but are subject to change. You can find out what is going on by calling at Camberwell Road where staff will also be able to tell you about other opportunities and social events that are happening across Southwark.

Computer Courses and Workshops

Thanks to some generous donations we have been able to run a number of computer courses and one-off workshops over the past year in response to high demand from our members. We are actively trying to encourage funders to support more courses so if you are interested in improving your computer skills, call in to the Centre and speak to Jon Morgan.

The Explorers Club

In addition to the activities listed, The Explorers Club, which has approx 350 members, publishes its monthly programme which includes almost weekly events and outings to places of interest in the area, across London and sometimes farther afield. The programme provides opportunities for older people, including the many who live alone, to broaden their cultural and social horizons and to make new friends. Call in to the Camberwell Road Centre to find out about membership of the Explorers and to see a sample monthly programme.

Southwark Pensioners Action Group

Another established group affiliated to SPC, also has an active programme of meetings and events focused on raising awareness and campaigning on issues that affect the health and independence of older people.

Recent campaigns have included opposition to the closure of the Maudsley Hospital Felix Post Unit, a specialist mental health service for older people; challenging the changes to Accident and Emergency Services which reduced specialist emergency treatment for people with mental health issues; regular lobbying of local and national politicians about the erosion of the value of the old age pension and the position of many older women who receive significantly less income than men.
