Outings and Holidays

Outings and holidays are very popular with members and users. Getting out in the fresh air, visiting new places or familiar places in the security of a group is very appealing to many and places go very quickly. Watch out for details in our One in 5 newsletter or the Southwark Explorers programme. We are very lucky and occasionally individuals and organisations offer us free trips, eg, to the Shard, or on a red routemaster bus. When these opportunities come up we advertise them in the centre and we prioritise members.

SPC Day Trips

We are putting the finishing touches to our holiday programme for 2018 and will publish it in the January 2018 newsletter which will be posted out to members mid January 2018.

Holiday 2018

Following feedback from members and users, we are currently planning the 2018 holiday. As most people would rather go when it is warmer, we are carefully researching hotels and costs for May or June 2018.

Southwark Explorers

The Southwark Explorers Club, founded in 2000 by Tony Lynes, started with just a handful of members, and now has nearly 300. It is open to everyone over the age of 50 (most of us are over 60) in Southwark and the surrounding area.

Our monthly programme offers free or low-price/subsidised weekly events and outings to places and events of cultural, artistic or historical interest (usually one per week), across London and further afield. We meet up at SPC setting out. Led by members who are pensioners, the Club also provides opportunities for older people, including the many who live alone, to make new friends.
Recent events have included guided tours of the Southbank Centre, The Magic Circle, and Clarence House. There have been day trips by coach or train to Broadstairs, RHS Wisley, Blenheim Palace and Cambridge. There is a regular programme of guided walks and boat trips, as well as theatre and film visits.

Cost
Explorers’ membership for 2016 is £10.00. We try to make our events accessible to as wide a range of members as possible, and many of our activities are subsidised.
