About Us
Background

SPC is a charity offering a range of services and activities to people over 50 in the London Borough of Southwark. Founded in 1987, the purpose of the Centre is to support older people to enjoy a good quality of life into a healthy old age by providing services, information and a community resource centre working to promote choice and opportunity for the diverse population of older people across the Borough.
The Centre's main office is in Camberwell. Our membership and contact database totals approx 800 individuals as well as over 20 affiliated groups and community organisations.
SPC has a small staff team led by the Centre Director and including a community development officer, administrator, information officer, advice worker and employment adviser.
Vision and Values
SPC recognises and values the contribution that older people make to the community through their experience, skills, wisdom and energy. The key principles that characterise our work are:
- Empowering individuals and groups working with and for older people to promote the well-being and independence of the over 50s
- Identifying and tackling barriers (financial, social and physical) that prevent older people from leading fulfilled and rewarding lives
- Combating social isolation
- Supporting individuals and groups to plan and lead activities and event that promote community participation and active citizenship
- Promoting the importance and value of healthy lifestyle choices
- Enabling older people to learn new skills including those that can improve employment opportunities
- Providing free and low-cost services to ensure accessibility and equality of opportunity to the diverse community of older people in Southwark
